Abstract This article examines how racial capitalism has shaped the ecological and technological dynamics of cotton production in United States South. Cotton’s destructive dependence on chemicals extraction lives resources was animated enabled by anti-Blackness, which sanctioned a systematic hostility to life that encoded environmental violence plantation landscapes from seed root. Agrotechnological notions scientific progress development conceived places, plants, Black people as interchangeable parts. Tracing these trajectories during slavery after abolition, focuses two dynamics: use augment soil fertility manage cotton’s ecologies, deployment protect monocultures.
